What it Takes to Save the Lakes

Were you inspired by the information in "The Ripple Effect" post from Friday? I know I was and now I'm ready to help protect our lakes and oceans! If you feel the same way, read below to find out more about local, national and international organizations working to keep our ocean and lakes clean and healthy. And, be sure to check back on Friday for the start of Bekah Loves Bees Week on The Curious Columnist!

Special Note: While I am a member of certain organizations listed here today, finding an organization to donate to or work with is a personal decision. So, be sure to do your research and decide what is right for you before moving forward with any donation or membership.

Alliance for the Great Lakes:

While interviewing Dr. Seilheimer for Friday's post, I learned that the Alliance for the Great Lakes has been a big part of the lake clean-up efforts. From helping with the microbead ban to preventing invasive species, the Great Lakes Alliance is committed to "ensuring that the lakes are safe and healthy for all."

So how can you get involved?

Oceana:

Launched in 2001, Oceana is an international organization that works to protect the world's oceans through targeted campaigns backed by science. According to the website, Oceana is focusing on campaigns that help to restore and retain sustainable fishing practices and reduce pollution.

So how can you get involved?

Surfrider Foundation:

With chapters all over the country, the Surfrider Foundation is "dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network." From beach clean-up efforts and plastic bag bans to coastal preservation and beach access efforts, the Surfrider Foundation is all about keeping the water clean and healthy for future generations.

So how can you get involved?
